What’s the value of a toothbrush? A towel? If you’re a refugee fleeing from a dangerous situation, hygiene items are not likely things you have time or space to pack. Understanding this, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste are a few of the items the RRC Kits Team supplies in a welcome kit for refugees when they first arrive in our community,
When refugees move into more permanent housing, the Kits Team provides a bathroom kit that includes towels and washcloths, a bath mat, a wastebasket, toilet paper, and similar items. To address the need for basic first aid supplies, the Kits Team has also coordinated with the Health Team to assemble a first aid kit for each household which includes band aids, antibiotic cream, acetaminophen, an ice pack and a thermometer, among other items.
In addition to providing hygiene, first aid, and bathroom kits for new arrivals in our community, the Kits Team also assembles relief kits for some of the millions of refugees outside the Eugene community. Each year the Kits Team organizes an event for assembling relief kits to commemorate World Refugee Day. Community members are invited to donate $25 to fill a kit with hygiene supplies provided by the Kits Team. This year the WRD celebration will be held Thursday, June 16, from 4:00-6:30 outside the First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive St. in Eugene. We’d love for you to join us to help us meet our goal of assembling 100 kits for refugee families!
If you or a group you belong to are looking for something meaningful to do—particularly to provide learning and empathy experiences for children—assembling school or relief kits is something you can easily do. Members of the Kits Team can help with the process. Several churches and other organizations locally have had kit-filling activities. The world’s focus right now is on Ukraine and the millions of refugees fleeing the country; that devastation is repeated in so many places. We can help refugees, both locally and around the world—if you are interested in organizing a kits event, indicate your interest by filling out our Contact form. Someone from the Kits Team will get in touch with you.
OUR MISSION Mobilize the community to welcome and support refugees and asylum seekers, fostering their well-being and self-sufficiency.
